About GST (Goods & Services Tax)

Australia

GST is a broad-based 10% tax levied on most goods and services purchased or consumed in Australia. It was introduced on 1 July 2000 under the Howard Government, replacing a fragmented system of wholesale sales taxes. GST is collected by businesses on behalf of the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and is typically already included in the advertised retail price of goods and services.

Businesses with a turnover of $75,000 or more per year (or $150,000 for non-profit organisations) are required to register for GST. Once registered, businesses charge GST on their taxable sales and can claim credits for the GST included in the price of their business purchases — this is known as an input tax credit.

Not everything attracts GST. Common GST-free items in Australia include most basic foods (such as bread, milk, fruit, and vegetables), medical and health services, some education courses, and exports of goods and services.

New Zealand

GST in New Zealand is a 15% tax applied to most goods and services purchased or consumed domestically. It is one of the broadest consumption taxes in the world, with very few exemptions compared to similar taxes in other countries. GST was first introduced on 1 October 1986 at a rate of 10%, increased to 12.5% in 1989, and then raised to its current rate of 15% in October 2010.

Businesses with a turnover exceeding NZD $60,000 per year must register for GST with Inland Revenue (IR). Registered businesses collect GST on their sales and can claim back GST paid on business expenses, making the tax effectively borne by the end consumer.

New Zealand's GST applies broadly, including to financial services in some cases, making it more comprehensive than Australia's system. GST-exempt supplies include donated goods sold by non-profits, fines and penalties, and certain residential accommodation. Most food and health products in New Zealand are subject to GST, unlike in Australia.

Worked Examples

The following examples show how GST calculations work in practice for both Australia and New Zealand.

Adding GST (Australia — 10%)

A contractor quotes a client $500 excluding GST. To find the GST-inclusive price, multiply the amount by 1.10:

$500 × 1.10 = $550.00 (GST-inclusive total)

The GST component is $550.00 − $500.00 = $50.00

Removing GST (Australia — 10%)

A receipt shows a total of $330. To find the pre-GST amount and the GST component, divide by 1.10:

$330 ÷ 1.10 = $300.00 (pre-GST amount)

The GST component is $330.00 − $300.00 = $30.00

Adding GST (New Zealand — 15%)

A tradesperson quotes NZD $800 excluding GST. To find the GST-inclusive price, multiply by 1.15:

$800 × 1.15 = $920.00 (GST-inclusive total)

The GST component is $920.00 − $800.00 = $120.00

Removing GST (New Zealand — 15%)

An invoice total is NZD $460. To extract the GST and find the pre-tax amount, divide by 1.15:

$460 ÷ 1.15 = $400.00 (pre-GST amount)

The GST component is $460.00 − $400.00 = $60.00

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GST included in the displayed price?

In Australia and New Zealand, retailers are required by law to display prices inclusive of GST. So when you see a price tag in a shop or on a website, the GST is already included. The exception is business-to-business transactions, where prices are often quoted excluding GST and the GST is added separately on the invoice.

How do I calculate GST manually?

To add GST in Australia, multiply the pre-tax amount by 1.10. To add GST in New Zealand, multiply by 1.15. To remove GST from an Australian price, divide by 1.10. To remove GST from a New Zealand price, divide by 1.15. The GST component alone can be found by subtracting the pre-tax amount from the GST-inclusive total.

What is the GST rate in Australia?

The GST rate in Australia is 10%. It has remained at this rate since it was introduced on 1 July 2000. The rate applies to most goods and services unless they are specifically listed as GST-free or input-taxed.

What is the GST rate in New Zealand?

The GST rate in New Zealand is 15%. This rate has been in place since 1 October 2010, when it was raised from the previous rate of 12.5%.

What items are GST-free in Australia?

GST-free items in Australia include most basic foods (fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, milk, meat, and fish), tap water, sewerage and drainage services, medical and allied health services, some education courses and childcare, exports, and certain charitable activities. Prepared foods, restaurant meals, soft drinks, and snack foods are generally taxable.

What items are GST-free in New Zealand?

New Zealand's GST base is broader than Australia's. GST-free (zero-rated) supplies include exported goods and services, some financial services, and sales of going concerns (businesses). Unlike Australia, New Zealand does not exempt basic food items from GST, meaning most grocery items attract the full 15% rate.

Do I need to register for GST?

In Australia, you must register for GST if your business turnover is $75,000 or more per year ($150,000 for non-profits). In New Zealand, registration is required once your turnover exceeds NZD $60,000 per year. Businesses below these thresholds can register voluntarily. Once registered, you must charge GST on your taxable sales and lodge regular GST returns.

Can I claim back GST?

Yes. GST-registered businesses can claim input tax credits (Australia) or deduct GST credits (New Zealand) for the GST they pay on goods and services used in their business. This means that, in practice, GST is only borne by the final consumer — businesses in the supply chain pass it on and reclaim it through their tax returns.
